Modern English - Gathering Dust

On this date in 1980, Modern English released their third single, "Gathering Dust". It was backed by "Tranquility Of A Summer Moment (Vice Versa) ". Neither track appeared on an album, though the A side was the lead track on a 1983 five song EP called Gathering Dust, and both tracks were added to their debut, Mesh & Lace, when it was re-released on CD. The Colchester, England post punk/new wave band first disbanded in 1986. They have reunited to record and perform a few times since.

The Weirdos - Action Design EP

On this date in 1980, The Weirdos released their second EP, Action Design. It was a four track EP that included "The Hideout", "I Feel", "Break on Through" and "Helium Bar". The Los Angeles punk band disbanded in 1981 before they released an album. They have occasionally reunited to perform and record.

Mass - You And I

On this date in 1980, Mass released their debut single, "You And I". It was backed by "Cabbage". Neither track appeared on an album though both were added as bonuses to their debut, Labour Of Love, when it was re-released on CD. The London post punk was formed by Gary Asquith, Mick Allen, and Mark Cox when Rema-Rema disbanded. They released one album and one single before disbanding in 1981.

Suburban Lawns - Janitor

On this date in 1980, Suburban Lawns released their second single,
"Janitor". It was backed by "Protection". Both tracks appeared on their self-titled debut album. The Long Beach, California new wave band disbanded in 1985 with one album, one EP and a couple of singles to their credit. The vocals for the band were handled by Su Tissue, though drummer Chuck Roast occasionally got some vocal assignments.

Josef K - It's Kinda Funny

On this date in 1980, Josef K released their third single, "It's Kinda Funny". It was backed by "Final Request". The A side appeared on their debut album, The Only Fun In Town. The B side was a non-LP track. The A side reached the #12 spot on the U.K. indie singles chart. The Only Fun In Town was their debut release but not the first album they recorded. Due to the band's dissatisfaction with the results of their first recording, Sorry For Laughing, recorded in 1980, it was not released until 1990. The Edinburgh, Scotland post-punk band disbanded in 1982 with just one album though posthumous releases would come out, including Sorry For Laughing. Guitarist Malcolm Ross joined Orange Juice and then Aztec Camera. Drummer Ronnie Torrance joined Boots For Dancing. Vocalist Paul Haig went on to a moderately successful solo career.

Cult Hero - I'm A Cult Hero

On this date in 1979, Cult Hero released their only single, "I'm A Cult Hero". It was backed by "I Dig You". There was no album to follow. Actually, there was no band. Cult Hero was The Cure, some friends and postman Frank Bell on vocals. He used to wear a tee shirt saying "I'm A Cult Hero" and the band thought it would be great to invite him into the studio to record a song or two. The single is the result of that session.

The Pretenders - Brass In Pocket

On this date in 1979, The Pretenders released their third single, "Brass In Pocket". It was backed by "Nervous But Shy" and an instrumental called "Swinging London". Only the A side appeared on their self-titled debut album. The other two tracks were non-LP tracks. The single reached the #1 spot on the U.K. singles chart and the #14 spot on the U.S. singles chart. The Hereford, England punk/new wave band, fronted by Ohio-raised Chrissie Hynde, is still performing.

Wire - Mannequin

On this date in 1977, Wire released their debut single, "Mannequin". It was backed by "Feeling Called Love" and "12XU". All three tracks appeared on their debut album, Pink Flag. The London punk/post-punk band went on hiatus in 1980 and the band members worked on other projects. They re-formed in 1985 and have been on and off ever since.

Brutality, Religion And A Dance Beat

On this date in 1977, Big In Japan and The Chuddy Nuddies released a combined 7 inch record called Brutality, Religion And A Dance Beat. Big In Japan's contribution was "Big In Japan". The Chuddy Nuddies' contribution was "Do The Chad". This was the first release by Big In Japan but technically not The Chuddy Nuddies' debut. Because of contractual obligations to Stiff Records, this was an alias for The Yachts who had already released one single under their real name. Big In Japan, a Liverpool, England punk band, later included Budgie (of Siouxsie and The Banshees) and Holly Johnson (of Frankie Goes To Hollywood) and released only one other single. The Yachts, a Liverpool, England power pop/new wave band disbanded in 1981 with two albums and ten singles to their credit under their real name. J.J. Campbell went on to It's Immaterial. Martin Dempsey went on to Pink Military.

On this date in 1982, The Lords Of The New Church released their third single, "Russian Roulette". The B side was "Young Don't Cry". The A side appeared on their self-titled debut album. The B side was a non-LP track that was added as a bonus track when the album was re-released on CD. The post-punk band consisted of punk veterans Stiv Bators (The Dead Boys), Brian James (The Damned), Dave Treganna (Sham 69) and Nick Turner (The Barracudas). They disbanded in 1989.

On this date in 1982, The Human League released their eleventh single, "Mirror Man". It was backed by "You Remind Me Of Gold". Both tracks appeared on their third EP, Fascination! (which was really a six-track mini-album). The single reached the #2 spot on the U.K. singles chart and the #30 spot on the U.S. singles chart. At the time, the Sheffield, England band were a six-piece unit. They are still active but are a three piece band now.

The Wipers - Youth Of America

On this date in 1981, The Wipers released their second album, Youth Of America. It was a six song album with "Taking Too Long", "Can This Be", "Pushing the Extreme", "When Its Over", "No Fair" and "Youth of America" as the tracks, none of which were offered up as singles. The album was expanded when re-released on CD. Their sound changed somewhat by the late '80's and were a major influence on the grunge sound that surfaced in the Northwest U.S. They disbanded in 2001.

Dark Day - Exterminating Angel

On this date in 1980, Dark Day released their debut album, Exterminating Angel. It contained the single, "Trapped". The New York City no wave band included ex-DNA vocalist Robin Crutchfield and ex-Tuxedomoon saxaphonist Steve Brown. They disbanded in 1982 but Robin Crutchfield resurrected the band as a solo project in 1999.

Art Objects - Showing Off To Impress The Girls

On this date in 1980, Art Objects released their second and final single, "Showing Off To Impress The Girls". It was backed by a live track, "Our Silver Sister". The A side appeared on their only album, Bagpipe Music. The B side was added as a bonus when it was re-released on CD. While the single failed to chart, the album did reach the #19 spot on the U.K. indie albums chart. The Bristol, U.K. post-punk band was hard to describe. It was like poetry set to music, kind of like some of The Fall's work, but not exactly. When the band disbanded after two singles and one album, Gerard Langley formed The Blue Aeroplanes.

Snakefinger - Chewing Hides The Sound

On this date in 1979, Snakefinger released his debut album, Chewing Hides The Sound. It contained the singles, "The Model" and "What Wilbur?". Snakefinger was actually London post punk musician Philip Charles Lithman. Under the name Snakefinger, he released five studio albums before dying of a heart attack on July 1, 1987. His close association with The Residents were a major influence on them and vice versa. He played for years with them live and contributed in the studio.

On this date in 1977, The Panik released their only contribution to vinyl, an EP called It Won't Sell. It was a three song product with "Modern Politics", "Urban Damnation" and "Murder" as its offerings. The Manchester contemporaries of Joy Division almost had Ian Curtis as their singer before he decided to continue with his current band, Warsaw, which became Joy Division. The Panik's drummer, Steve B'Dale had been in Stiff Kittens, the band that became Warsaw and, eventually, Joy Division.

On this date in 1982, Flipper released their third single, "Get Away". It was backed by "The Old Lady That Swallowed The Fly". The A side appeared on their second long-play, a live cassette-only release called Blow'n Chunks. Neither track appeared in studio form on an album. The San Francisco hardcore punk band disbanded in 1987 after two studio albums, some live material and several singles. Lead singer Will Shatter died of a drug overdose in 1988. Poly Styrene - Translucence

On this date in 1980, Poly Styrene released her debut solo album, Translucence. It included the single, "Talk In Toytown". Poly Styrene had formerly been the lead singer of X-Ray Spex. After a brief solo career, she became a Hare Krishna and her musical career slowed considerably. She reunited with X-Ray Spex in 1995 to release the band's second album, Conscious Consumer, their first since 1978.

The Rezillos - Destination Venus

On this date in 1978, The Rezillos released their fourth single, "Destination Venus". It was backed by "Mystery Action". Both tracks appeared on their second album, Mission Accomplished...But The Beat Goes On, but in live form. Both tracks in studio form were included on a later retrospective called Can't Stand The Rezillos: The (Almost) Complete Rezillos. The single reached the #43 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Edinburgh, Scotland punk/new wave band disbanded in 1978. Eugene Reynolds and Faye Fife re-formed under the name The Revillos (due to contractual obligations, they could not use the name "Rezillos"). Jo Callis and Simon Templar formed Shake. Wayne County and The Electric Chairs - Fuck Off

On this date in 1977, The Electric Chairs released their second 7-inch record, "Fuck Off". It was backed by "On The Crest". Both tracks appeared on their second album, Blatantly Offenzive (really, an EP). The New York City punk band was fronted by Georgian born transsexual, Wayne County, and began life as simply The Electric Chairs. When the lead singer's notoriety became even bigger than the band, Wayne's name was prominently out front in the band's name. Supposedly, an operation in 1980 made him "Jayne" County, but he/she has claimed that the equipment was not altered.

The Nerves EP

On this date in 1976, The Nerves released their self-titled debut EP. It contained "Hanging On The Telephone", "When You Find Out", "Give Me Some Time" and "Working Too Hard". This was the Los Angeles power pop band's only release while they were together (there were releases of older material distributed afterwards). "Hanging On The Telephone" would be a #5 U.K. hit for Blondie when they re-recorded it. The band included Peter Case, later of The Plimsouls, and Paul Collins, later of The Beat (The Paul Collins Beat).

U.K. Subs - Shake Up The City

On this date in 1982, U.K. Subs released their tenth 7-inch record, an EP called Shake Up The City. It contained "Self Destruct", "Police State (Part 1)" and "War Of The Roses". None of the tracks appeared on a regular album. The London punk band, originally called U.K. Subversives, is still led by Charlie Harper and shows no sign of slowing down.

Music For Pleasure - Light

On this date in 1982, Music For Pleasure released their third single, "Light". It was backed by "Malefice". The 12 inch version offered a third track, "Nostalgia". The A side and the 12-inch bonus track appeared on their debut album, Into The Rain. The other song was a non-LP track. The Leeds, England new wave band disbanded in 1985 after two albums and several singles.
