In 1997, the horror punk group The Misfits released a music video of them covering "Monster Mash" live. They also released a studio version as a single in 1999, and recorded a separate version for their 2003 album Project 1950 (see below).

The Jam - Down In The Tubestation At Midnight
On this date in 1978, The Jam released their sixth U.K. single, "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight". The B sides were "So Sad About Us" and "The Night". The A side appeared on their third album, All Mod Cons. The B sides were non-LP tracks but were added on as bonus tracks when the deluxe edition of the album was released on CD. The single reached the #15 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Woking, England punk/mod revivalist band have not played together since disbanding in 1982 though Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler have toured together as The Jam since. Paul Weller is the holdout.

Sad News
Brendan Mullen, founder of The Masque, died in Los Angeles today of a stroke. The Masque, located in Hollywood, California, was one of the few clubs actively promoting the early Los Angeles punk rock scene. It existed from 1977 to 1979. X, The Mau Mau's, The Avengers, The Germs, The Dils, The Dickies, The Zeros, The Bags and countless others played there.
Rest in peace, Brendan, and thanks for your important contribution to the California punk rock scene!

On this date in 1982, The Gymslips released their debut single, "48 Crash". It was backed by "Miss Nunsweeta". The A side appeared on their debut album, Rocking With The Renees. The B side did not but was added when the album was re-released on CD. The all-girl power pop band from London released one album and a few singles before disbanding in 1983.

On this date in 1981, Zounds released their debut album, The Curse Of Zounds! None of their previous singles or future singles were included on the album (though the CD re-release added them as bonus tracks). This was their only full-length album. Patrik Fitzgerald - The Paranoid Ward
On this date in 1978, Patrik Fitzgerald released his third EP, The Paranoid Ward. It was a nine song effort. The EP was released in both 7 and 12 inch form. Patrik Fitzgerald, who once auditioned to be in London SS (the pre-Clash band that featured future Clash members, Mick Jones and Terry Chimes, future Damned guitarist Brian James and future Chelsea, Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik member Tony James) was a London punk poet whose poetry was usually accompanied by his acoustic guitar. He enlisted musicians to assist as necessary.

The Saints - One, Two, Three, Four
On this date in 1977, The Saints released a four song EP entitled One, Two, Three, Four. It was issued both as a four song EP and as a double 7 inch. It was their fifth 7-inch record. The four songs were "Lipstick On Your Collar", "One Way Street", "Demolition Girl" and "River Deep Mountain High". Both "One Way Street" and "Demolition Girl" had previously appeared on their debut album, (I'm) Stranded. When the album was re-released on CD, the two other tracks were added as bonuses. The Brisbane, Australia punk/post punk band has continued on despite the fact that Chris Bailey is the only original member left and has been since 1979. Founder Ed Kuepper, who left to form Laughing Clowns in 1979, has done shows with The Saints in the last few years.

XTC - 3D
On this date in 1977, XTC made their vinyl debut with a four song EP called 3D. It contained "Science Friction", "She's So Square", "Dance band" and "Goodnight Sucker". The fourth song was not listed on the label and is an unlisted bonus track. None of the tracks appeared on a regular album though the first three were added as bonus tracks to their debut album, White Music, when it was re-released on CD. The Swindon, England post punk/new wave band called it quits in 2006 when Colin Moulding expressed a desire to call it quits. Andy Partridge didn't feel that it would be XTC without the both of them.

John Cooper Clarke - The Innocents
On this date in 1977, John Cooper Clarke released his debut EP, The Innocents. The record contained "Suspended Sentence", "Innocents" and "Psycle Sluts Parts 1 & 2". "Psycle Sluts Part 1" wound up on his debut album, Ou Est La Maison De Fromage, S'Il Vous Plait. Both parts of "Psycle Sluts" wound up on his second album, Disguise In Love. John Cooper Clarke was a punk poet from Manchester, U.K., whose poems would often, but not always, be set to background music. He opened for such bands as Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, Joy Division and The Fall. He still performs.

The Alarm - Marching On

They had begun life as a punk band called The Toilets. Later, they were a mod-influenced band called Seventeen which is when they released their first record. Discharge - Never Again
On this date in 1981, Discharge released their fifth 7-inch record, an EP called Never Again. It was a three song release that included, aside from the title track, "Death Dealers" and "Two Monstrous Nuclear Stockpiles". None of the tracks appeared on an album but all three were added as bonuses to their debut, Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, when re-released on CD. The Staffordshire, England punk/hardcore band did not release anything on vinyl until 1980 despite having formed in 1977 and having started recording demos in 1977. They disbanded in 1987 but have performed occasionally since.

Lora Logic - Wonderful Offer

On this date in 1981, Vice Squad released their debut album, No Cause For Concern. No singles resulted from the release (though "Last Rockers" and "Resurrection" were added as bonus tracks when it was re-released on CD). The Bristol, England punk band featured Beki Bondage, one of the original punk pin-up girls. They disbanded in 1985 but re-formed in 1997 and still record and perform.

On this date in 1978, Johnny Thunders released his first solo album, So Alone. It included the single, "(You Can't Put Your Arms Around A) Memory". Johnny Thunders was, of course, in The New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers before this solo effort. He had an all-star lineup of musicians helping him with this album including Steve Jones and Paul Cook of Sex Pistols, Peter Perrett of The Only Ones, Walter Lure and Billy Rath of The Heartbreakers and Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders.

INXS - Don't Change
On this date in 1982, INXS released their eighth single, "Don't Change". It was backed by "Go West" in the U.S. and "You Never Used To Cry" in the U.K. The A side appeared on their third album, Shabooh Shoobah. Neither B side made the album. The U.K. 12 inch version had a third track, "Golden Playpen" which was on the album. The single reached the #80 spot on the U.S. singles chart. The Perth, Australia new wave band came to a sudden halt when lead singer Michael Hutchence died on November 22, 1997, apparently due to hanging by his own hands. They found a new singer a couple of years ago and have recorded and performed. The replacement singer has recently been given his walking papers by the band. On this date in 1982, The Exploited released their seventh single, "Computers Don't Blunder". It was backed by "Addiction". Neither track initially appeared on an album but both were added as bonus tracks to their second studio album, Troops Of Tomorrow, when it was re-released on CD. The Edinburgh, Scotland band was one of the U.K.'s original Oi! bands. They are still together but moved towards thrash by the late '80's.

On this date in 1979, The Last Words released their debut single in the U.K., "Animal World". It was the third time they released this single, the first two times in Australia. It was backed by "No Music In The World Today". Neither track appeared on an album. In total, the Sydney, Australia punk band would release five singles (three of them were releases of "Animal World") and one album before disbanding in 1980. A later compilation saw "Animal World" make its album debut.
